A puppet may be operated directly by a puppeteer, or indirectly - by the use of
strings or by other mechanical contrivance - even remotely by electronics. Puppets can even be worn in costume. Puppets may also be animated with stop motion animation. Possibly all of these techniques were employed in Frank Oz's
Little Shop Of Horrors (1986).
You can control a puppet in many ways, and combine the methods to good effect. for example, it was common on the muppet show to use one
hand to control the mouth and head movements directly, while the other
hand of the puppeteer could move the
rods to control the arms. Eyes may be opened and closed by pulling
strings in the inside of the head.
